King Charles pays poignant tribute to Queen Elizabeth II in touching Mother’s Day post | Royal | News

King Charles and Queen Camilla have marked Mother’s Day in a poignant and personal way. Their Majesties’ official Twitter account shared two throwback pictures.

In the first one, a young Princess Elizabeth holds her smiling firstborn on her lap.

In the second, most recent picture, Camilla pays tribute to her mother, Rosalind Shand.

The tweet was accompanied by a message reading: “To all mothers everywhere, and to those who may be missing their mums today, we are thinking of you and wishing you a special #MothersDay.”

This is the first Mother’s Day King Charles celebrates without his mother Elizabeth II at his side.

Her Late Majesty died on September 8 aged 96, having served the country for 70 years.

Mrs Shand, wife of Major Bruce Shand, died in 1994 after having suffered for years of severe osteoporosis.

Mrs Shand’s illness, also shared by her own mother Sonia Rosemary Keppel, had a great impression on Camilla, who has since been campaigning to raise awareness on osteoporosis.

In 1997, she became patron of the National Osteoporosis Society, a role she retained until 2019, when it became the Royal Osteoporosis Society and she became its president.

Her Majesty has been vocal for decades about the importance of getting checked and learning about the potential risks of developing the bone disease, which she has described as “devastating”.

Marking World Osteoporosis Day in a video released in October 2020, Camilla spoke about her mother’s suffering, saying: “In those dark old days [osteoporosis] was seldom discussed, rarely diagnosed and usually attributed to old women with so-called ‘dowager’s humps,’.

“My family and I knew nothing about it and were at a loss to know how we could help alleviate the terrible pain she suffered.”

Many other members of the Royal Family are celebrating Mother’s Day today.

Among them is the Wales family, with the Princess of Wales likely to be celebrated by her three children today.

In previous years, Kensington Palace shared either pictures of Kate with Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis or cards the young royals had made for her.

Last year, the then Duke and Duchess of Cambridge returned from their whirlwind tour of the Caribbean in time to mark the special day with their children.

Mother’s Day, however, is likely a bittersweet celebration for Prince William, who lost his mother Princess Diana when he was aged only 15.

In 2021, George and Charlotte addressed their Mother’s Day cards to “Granny Diana”, with the Wales’ daughter also including: “Papa is missing you.”
