A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a huge explosion at a home in Yorkshire left a gaping hole in the terraced property and caused a fire in the roof. Residents living near to the house in Goole were evacuated in the early hours of the morning and the street remains closed.

Around 1.10am this morning (January 22) emergency services were called to Malborough Road in Goole, following reports of a gas explosion.

Flames could be seen licking the roof of the house and residents told Yorkshire Live bricks were seen tumbling down from the roof and hitting parked cars.

Nicolescu Sorin witnessed what happened and said: “It was a gas explosion, it happened around 1am. Pieces of the house wall fell over the cars and across the street, including power lines/tv cable.

“It’s the first time I’ve seen something like this. The intervention of the firemen and the police was exceptional.

“Their involvement in our safety is commendable, not being English citizens, the neighbours welcomed us into their homes. It was a cold night and a lesson from which I learned.

“Everyone be careful. From 1am to 9 am we were evacuated – a terrible experience so please take care of you and your homes.”

Jonathan Kirk told the BBC he saw the explosion as he drove along the street, said he smelled gas after the blast and tried to wake neighbours to warn them.

“I heard the explosion and thought it was my tyre. I then saw the explosion and thought: ‘Is that real?’,” he said.

The DJ was dropping off a friend on a nearby street when he saw the damage, capturing the fire on his dash camera.

He added: “I saw the tenant climbing out of the window through what’s left of the frame.

“I helped him out the rubble, looked up, and saw the structure of the neighbour’s house.”

Investigations as to the cause of the fire and the explosion are ongoing.

In a statement Humberside Police said: “We are in attendance at the scene of a suspected gas explosion at a house on Malborough Road in Goole.

“We were called at 1.10am today (Sunday 22 January) to reports of an explosion and fire at the address.

“The area was cordoned off to allow emergency services to work safely and for the safety of the public.

“No one is reported to have been seriously injured. A man has been arrested at the scene on suspicion of committing arson with intent to endanger life.

“He has been taken into police custody. Neighbouring properties have been evacuated as a precaution. Occupants of all neighbouring properties have been accounted for.

“A road closure and police cordon remain in place, and we are asking for people to stay away from the area whilst emergency services deal with the incident.”
