UK long-range forecast: New maps show April snow deluge pushing over Britain | Weather | News

Despite April being around the corner, Britons have been warned of continuous wintry weather this week amid forecasts for bitter winds, rain, snow and thunder. Looking ahead, weather maps have revealed some areas may be hit with snow and frost as temperatures fail to recover, with the first half of next month showing no signs of glorious spring sunshine.

Temperatures will plunge in the run-up to April as -10C Arctic gusts bring wintry downpours to parts. Forecasters have said from Wednesday temperatures are set to turn milder, although a jet stream will hurl bouts of rain in from the Atlantic.

While forecasters have warned that widespread wet and windy weather is expected, Scotland is braced for snow as temperatures plummet.

Snow in parts of northern Scotland could settle as early as this week, with the majority expected during the first week of April, according to the Met Office and weather maps.

Many areas in Scotland and northern England will be blanketed in snow over the following two weeks, as some areas could see 1cm of snowfall per hour.

London areas are expected to see chilly evenings as temperatures are set to drop to as cold as 3C.

However, Scotland will experience milder temperatures lingering around 4C, according to weather maps. The Met Office has warned of “a predominantly unsettled pattern” during the first week of April, with showers or longer spells of rain for many.

The weather service continued: “By the second week of April, perhaps the greater chance of drier conditions will be across the north, albeit with some overnight frost.”

Meteorologist Aidan McGivern said: “The showers will be distributed mainly in the north and along the North Sea coast, although it will be a cold start for Monday.

“We keep that chilly air, albeit with drier conditions on Tuesday.

“On Wednesday, it is likely to change again with low pressure pushing in from the West and the initial band of rain will likely fall as snow in places, mainly northern hills, before it turns back to rain because we will be seeing milder south-westerly winds return.

“It will be an unsettled end to next week but with temperatures recovering.”

As most of the country expects more soggy weather, the Environment Agency issued 13 flood warnings and 42 alerts.

This means properties are at risk of flooding, the agency warned.
