Britain is set to be battered by adverse weather today as the Met Office issued yellow alerts for snow, ice and rain across the country. While the south of England and areas in the Midlands are expected to remain mostly dry, unsettled weather is expected to be on its way, according to weather maps.
The weather service has warned that parts of the Midlands is set to be battered by “persistent rain”, including Derby, Manchester, and Leeds.
However, Scotland and northern England are set to be blanketed in fresh snow.
The Met Office yellow snow and ice alert, which covers the Highlands and Shetland, is in place from Tuesday 5pm until 10am this morning and warns of “injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces”.
A yellow snow alert covering a large part of Scotland and northern England, which is in place from 4pm today until 4am Thursday morning, warns of widespread disruptions as temperatures plummet, mainly in areas above 100 to 200m.

Later this evening and in the early hours of Thursday, the snowfall will turn to rain as milder weather conditions spread across the British Isles, the Met Office stated.
Meanwhile, below 100 to 200m, snow may fall briefly during the late afternoon and early evening before turning to rain.
However, covering all of Northern Ireland is a rain warning as residents should be expected to be battered by “persistent” wet and windy conditions.
The Met Office wrote: “Rain is expected to set in through Wednesday morning, and become persistent for many places. The most impactful conditions are expected to develop from Wednesday afternoon, as totals start to build up.”
Around 20-30mm of rainfall is expected, however, some areas could see up to 40mm.
Areas in northern England are also covered by a yellow ice alert until 10am this morning, warning commuters of a tricky morning drive as daytime sleet and snow showers fade allowing icy patches to develop on untreated surfaces.
Looking ahead to the end of the month, the Met Office predicts weather to “remain unsettled”.
Outlining the forecast for March 19 to 28, the weather service wrote: “More wet and windy weather arrives into the west, becoming widespread into the start of next week.
“Thereafter, confidence is generally reduced but most likely remaining unsettled, with periods of rain and strong winds expected for many areas at times.
“There is likely to be a continued risk of snow in northern parts of the country, particularly across higher ground of Scotland, and perhaps some wintry showers for the far north.
“Temperatures overall will be near average to mild in the south, but near average to cold in the north.”
