Six people have been killed and at least seven others seriously hurt in a mass shootin near a church in Hamburg, Germany. The shooting took place in Hamburg’s Alsterdorf district, with a further 17 others hving serious injuries.

Police responded to emergeny calls at around 9pm with reports shooters are still on the run and a major police operation is underway to find them.

Authorities warn of the ‘extreme’ danger as residents are warned to leave their homes or stay awy from the area.

Emergency serves are at the scene as the police track down the perpetrators.

An official hazard announcement told nearby residents: “Around 9.00pm today, one or more unknown perpetrators shot people in a church. Damage location: The following areas are affected in the district (Hamburg Groß Borstel) Deelböge and the surrounding area. The streets at the site of the damage are extensively cordoned off.”

Police resorted to using a warning app to alert residents about the attack.

Residents were told to “seek shelter in a building immediately and only use your phones in extreme emergencies.”

According to Hamburg police, the shooting took place at a Jehovah’s Witness centre on Deelböge street in the Gros Borstel district.

Police previously said on Twitter that a large operation was under way in the next-door Alsterdorf district. The area is a few miles north of the central area of Hamburg, which is Germany’s second-biggest city.

The Hamburg city government said the shooting took place in the Gross Borstel district.
