Met Office issues fresh warning for torrential rain and snow showers to hit parts of UK | Weather | News

Forecasters have warned areas in the UK will be lashed with “persistent rain” as the weekend nears. More northern parts of the country may expect snow showers and icy conditions, the Met Office has predicted.

Large swathes of Britain are covered by a rain warning, with commuters expecting major delays and disruptions as spray and flooding on roads cause chaos.

Some areas could see over 100mm of rain, while downpours of 40-70mm are expected “quite widely”.

The rain will be coupled with generally windy conditions, the Met Office predicted.

This is set to reduce visibility even further with spray from cars.

However, conditions are expected to improve this afternoon, with a mild weekend expected for most.

Areas affected by the Met Office’s yellow rain warning, which is in place from midnight until 3pm today, include Central, Tayside & Fife, East Midlands, North West England, SW Scotland, Lothian Borders, Strathclyde, Wales, West Midlands, Yorkshire & Humber.

All of Northern Ireland is also affected by a yellow alert, warning of heavy rain causing difficult travel conditions today.

The weather warning was implemented yesterday and runs through until 10am this morning.

While many will experience a damp start this morning, people further up north will see a return of wintry conditions as the Met Office issued a snow warning overnight.

The yellow snow warning ended at 4am this morning, but roads and railways may be affected by the chilly conditions.

Areas under the warning include Central, Tayside & Fife, Grampian, Highlands & Eilean Siar, North East England, North West England, SW Scotland, Lothian Borders, Strathclyde and Yorkshire & Humber.

Southern areas should expect a milder Thursday compared to the rest of the UK, but according to weather maps London areas could still see up to 5mm of rainfall.

Meanwhile, areas around Plymouth may experience some showers amounting to 12mm of rainfall, according to WXCharts.

Temperatures across the UK linger around the high single digits today, with London expected to be 8C and northern areas a bit chillier at around 5C.

Northern Ireland could see temperatures of 9C today.
